چکیده

The study focused on assessment of metal accumulation in certain aquatic macrophytes and benthic organisms to be used as biomonitors. The macrophytes and benthic organisms collected during April to May (2011) from river Cauvery, one of the main fresh water aquatic systems in the south of India. Microwave digested samples of discrete organs of macrophytes and benthic organisms were analyzed for metal concentration using AAS-6300. In macrophytes, among the eight metals investigated, six (Fe, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cu, and Cd) were showed higher degree of accumulation in root whereas, remaining (Mn and Zn) in stem and leaf respectively. Vallesnaria spiralis showed greatest potency to acumulate Fe, Mn and Cu, while Nymphe stellata showed the better ability to accumulate Zn and Cr. Cd was found only in Aquatic neam and Vallisnaria spiralis at downstream stations with very negligible concentration. Based on the accumulation level in macrophytes, the eight metals were arranged in the order of Fe> Mn> Zn> Cu> Pb> Cr> Ni > Cd. Among benthos, mollusca have showed a more accumulation capacity fallowed by crustacean and annelid. Bioaccumulation factor for benthos were observed in the sequence of Cu>Mn>Zn>Ni>Fe>Cr>Pb>Cd.

Metal contamination in benthic macroinvertebrates in a sub-basin in the southeast of Brazil.

Benthic macroinvertebrates have many useful properties that make possible the use of these organisms as sentinel in biomonitoring programmes in freshwater. Combined with the characteristics of the water and sediment, benthic macroinvertebrates are potential indicators of environmental quality. Thus, the spatial occurrence of potentially toxic metals (Al, Zn, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni) in the wa...

Role of Phragmites Australis for Biomonitoring and Phytoremediation of Heavy Metals Pollution in Badavar River, Lorestan Province (Iran)

Background & Aims of the Study: Aquatic macrophytes, given their rapid growth and high bio mass production, great potential to accumulate heavy metals in their organs. Phragmites australis as a hyper-cumulative plant plays an important role in the bioremediation. The Badavar River of Noorabad, Lorestan province, is exposed to urban wastewater and agricultural runoffs. In order to heavy metals (...

Developments in aquatic insect biomonitoring: a comparative analysis of recent approaches.

Aquatic insects and other benthic invertebrates are the most widely used organisms in freshwater biomonitoring of human impact. Because of the high monetary investment in freshwater management, decisions are often based on biomonitoring results, and a critical and comparative review of different approaches is required. We used 12 criteria that should be fulfilled by an "ideal" biomonitoring too...

Assessment of Toxic Metals Concentration using Pearl Oyster, ‎Pinctada radiate, as Bioindicator on the Coast of Persian Gulf, Iran‎

Background: Persian Gulf is a semi-closed environment which is affected by pollution ‎from heavy metals. Entrance of heavy metals to the water column and binding to ‎sediment particles can affect the benthic organisms that can accumulate these ‎materials in their body. Noticing this ability, mussels are considered as bio-monitoring ‎agents.‎ Methods: The pearl oyster, Pinctada radiate, and sed...

Epiphyton as a niche for ammonia-oxidizing bacteria: detailed comparison with benthic and pelagic compartments in shallow freshwater lakes.

Next to the benthic and pelagic compartments, the epiphyton of submerged macrophytes may offer an additional niche for ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in shallow freshwater lakes. In this study, we explored the potential activities and community compositions of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria of the epiphytic, benthic, and pelagic compartments of seven shallow freshwater lakes which differed in their tro...
